Integrating Essential Skills

40–43% of the ACT math section

Two fifths of the section: rates, percentages, proportions, area and volume from middle school, asked at a question a minute and usually three small steps deep. Nothing here is hard. All of it is where time goes.

Rates, Percentages & Proportions

A rate is a division, and the units say which way round. Miles per gallon is miles divided by gallons; once you have the rate, any other distance or any other tank is one multiplication away.

The problem
A car travels 150 miles on 6 gallons of gas. At that rate, how many gallons are needed to travel 400 miles?
  1. A1616
  2. B1515
  3. C2424
  4. D1010
Working1 / 2
  1. The rate, miles per gallon1506=25\frac{150}{6} = 25

Multi-step Problems

The ACT builds a question by stacking two or three simple ones: find this, use it to find that, then answer what was asked. The wrong choices are the intermediate results, so the last line — checking that the number you have is the number that was asked for — is the one that scores.

The problem
A rectangular garden 12 feet by 20 feet is surrounded on all sides by a path 2 feet wide. What is the area of the path, in square feet?
  1. F144144
  2. G384384
  3. H6464
  4. J128128
Working1 / 3
  1. The path adds 2 feet on every side, so 4 to each dimension16×24=38416 \times 24 = 384

Fractions, Decimals & Number Sense

Comparing fractions, ordering decimals, the order of operations, and arithmetic with negatives. None of it is beyond the seventh grade and all of it is on the test, where a slip costs the same as a wrong integral. Common denominators for adding; cross-multiplying, or decimals, for comparing.

The problem
Which of the following numbers is between 23\dfrac{2}{3} and 34\dfrac{3}{4}?
  1. A710\dfrac{7}{10}
  2. B58\dfrac{5}{8}
  3. C45\dfrac{4}{5}
  4. D1112\dfrac{11}{12}
Working1 / 3
  1. The two ends as decimals23=0.66…,34=0.75\tfrac{2}{3} = 0.66\ldots, \quad \tfrac{3}{4} = 0.75
